KidStartHomelessness is devastating for children. The deprivation, instability, and exposure to peril they face daily can exceed their ability to cope, resulting in behavioral, educational, and mental health problems. The National Center developed KidStart in 1991 to respond to the pronounced developmental delays found among homeless preschoolers between ages 3 to 6. The program: (1) evaluated the needs of homeless preschoolers; (2) enrolled them in developmentally appropriate educational programs and specialized services; and (3) activated community-wide service and advocacy networks on behalf of children and families. First piloted in Boston, KidStart was replicated at more than 25 sites in 17 states and the District of Columbia, including emergency shelters, hospitals, and day care centers. Many of the original sites continue to provide services to homeless children today. |
